The latest superfood ingredients to know about in skincare…

With more of a focus on natural ingredients, it's no surprise that superfoods are constantly making their way into our skin, hair and body formulas. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, superfoods offer a wide range of benefits when applied topically, the same way they do when consumed in our diet.

Algae

This marine ingredient has found its way into the modern diet with its myriad of health benefits, and now it’s emerging in the skincare world. These aquatic wonders can be divided into macro-algae (seaweed and kelp) and micro-algae (single cell microscopic organisms). In skincare products, you will most commonly find three types of algae: brown, red and green – each supporting your skin in different ways.

Given algae is found in the sea, it comes as no surprise that it can retain a LOT of water, making it an excellent hydrator for the skin. Red algae in particular has proven to be a promising additive to SPF because of its abilities to absorb harmful UVA and UVB rays. With such variety of benefits, this superfood ingredient is a must-have in your beauty ritual to revive a glowing, youthful complexion.

Aloe vera

This succulent plant has been used for centuries to treat and soothe wounds while improving digestion. With anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibiotic and antibacterial properties, aloe vera gel is a multi-tasking delight. Often used in moisturisers, aloe vera is rich in water, which helps to deliver moisture to your skin and lock it in for a rejuvenated, radiant appearance. Calm redness, soothe sunburn and reduce irritation with aloe-vera infused skincare or even by cutting open an aloe vera plant and rubbing it into your skin. One thing is for sure, incorporating this superfood ingredient into your skincare routine provides gentle yet powerful results, leaving your skin refreshed, balanced, and revitalised.

Natural squalane

Natural squalane is extracted from olive oil, sugar and rice bran and it’s making a rise in the beauty industry due to its hydrating hero properties. This 100% vegan superfood works hard to soften dry or dehydrated skin and it’s lightweight, fast-absorbing texture makes it a great nourishing ingredient for all skin types.

"Helping to fight skin damage and free radicals, which can both accelerate the ageing process, squalane is a great detoxifier" says Rosanna. "Regular use can also boost collagen production, resulting in firmer skin" she adds.

Dermatologist-approved skincare Biossance is powered by squalane, after their scientists bioengineered the skin-identical hydrating molecule. From eye creams to cleansing oils and plumping serums, this is your go-to brand to experience the benefits of squalane.

Bakuchiol

Although you wouldn’t put bakuchiol in your morning smoothie, it deserves a spot as a superfood ingredient in the skincare scene. Retinol is one of the most powerful ingredients in skincare, but for people with sensitive skin, it can be a little too potent. Bakuchiol is a vegan plant extract offering the same anti-ageing and rejuvenating properties as retinol, but without the irritating side effects. This natural ingredient helps to increase cellular turnover, stimulating collagen production and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

You can use bakuchiol both in the morning and in the evening, so it’s far easier to slot into your skincare routine but make sure to apply SPF afterwards to keep your skin protected against UV rays.

Oats

A powerhouse ingredient, oats are great for breakfast and they’re celebrated for their soothing and moisturising benefits. Ideal for sensitive or dry skin, oats are rich in beta-glucan, which helps retain moisture and create a protective barrier on the skin. Their anti-inflammatory properties make oats perfect for calming irritation, soothing redness, and helping to alleviate itchy skin. Oats gently exfoliate, removing dead skin cells and revealing a smoother, softer complexion. Packed with antioxidants, they also help protect against environmental damage. Incorporating oats into your skincare routine delivers nourishment and comfort, leaving your skin feeling calm, hydrated, and beautifully balanced.

From a young age I’ve been immersed in the beauty industry, getting my first job at a skin clinic and staying there for almost 5 years. My love for skincare was born from the constant exposure to new French pharma skincare products, award-winning supplements and revolutionary techniques to snatch your face. My go-to look is a dewy, natural base using a tinted moisturiser, enhanced by a colourful eyeliner. The Garnier SPF50+ Face Fluid and YSL Touche Éclat Blur Primer are my holy grails.
